The number of fraudulent attacks against Brazilians reached 1.9 million in the first half of 2021, which corresponds to an increase of 15.6% over the same period last year. According to Serasa Experian’s Fraud Attempts Indicator, the increase was mainly driven by criminal actions against people up to the age of 25.
Banks and cards recorded 1.2 million fraud attempts. The sector with the highest growth in the comparison between this year’s six-month period and 2020 was retail, with an increase of 89.5%. Telecommunications services, on the other hand, was the only sector to record a drop in the number of fraudulent attacks.
According to the Fraud Attempts Indicator, the region with the most occurrences is the Southeast, with just over 1 million, and the North had the lowest number, with 120,000 records.
Among the main fraud attempts verified by Serasa Experian, using false or stolen documents and leaving the victim at a loss, are buying cell phones, issuing credit cards, financing retail electronics, opening a bank account, buying cars and starting a business.
